Did you know that Algonquin Provincial Park was a favorite painting destination of the Group of Seven, Canada’s most celebrated landscape artists?

Their work, characterized by bold colors, expressive brushstrokes, and a deep connection to nature, helped define Canadian art and identity.

Who Were the Group of Seven?

Formed in the early 20th century, the Group of Seven was a collective of Canadian painters who sought to capture the raw beauty of the country's wilderness.

Their members included:

Lawren Harris – Known for his striking depictions of northern landscapes and Arctic scenes.

A.Y. Jackson – A master of movement and energy in landscape painting.

Tom Thomson – Though not an official member (he passed before the group formally formed), his bold and expressive Algonquin Park paintings were a major influence.

J.E.H. MacDonald, Franklin Carmichael, Arthur Lismer, Frederick Varley, and Frank Johnston – Each brought their unique vision, but together, they shaped a movement.

These artists were captivated by Canada’s untouched landscapes—especially Algonquin Provincial Park, where they spent time painting en plein air, hiking, and exploring. Their work became synonymous with Canada’s natural beauty and artistic identity.
